Scholastic Chess of Indiana

Welcome to the Scholastic Chess of Indiana 2026 Indivivual Regionals!

Please read the following carefully. It will tell you almost all you need to know about the 2026 Regionals. Please recall that tournament organization is dependent on many factors, including the number of entrants, weather events, etc. We reserve the right to make changes as necessary to ensure a good experience for students.

There will be five Regionals.

Please remember that Evansville and Hammond are on Central Time, and Indianapolis, Terre Haute and Warsaw are on Eastern time. Doors will open at 8:00AM local time at all Regionals. Players should be in the building ready for the players' meeting by 8:30. The first round will begin ASAP after the players' meeting. Please allow time to find your way around what may be a large and unfamiliar campus. Players who are not present at the start of the first round may be forfeited.

There will be room for coaches, parents and spectators. They may or may not be allowed in the playing area, depending on the local facilities.

There will be concessions for sale at all sites. Parents are welcome to go out for food, but players are asked to stay in the building. Tournament schedules are notoriously unpredictable, and players leaving the building can cause delays.

It is very difficult to give an accurate ending time for a tournament. All sections will not necessarily end at the same time. Small sections may require only 3 rounds and could be done by noon. Larger sections could take until late afternoon. I suggest you try to keep the entire day open for chess, if possible.

We will play sufficient rounds to guarantee at most one perfect score, with a maximum of 6. We will play at least 3 rounds in every section.

Sets and boards will be supplied. Players may bring their own equipment for skittles play between rounds.

We will furnish clocks only for games going long. Students may use their own clocks. Games without clocks will get clocks 20 minutes from the projected end time of their game, with each player given 10 minutes with no delay.

We will use the following time controls. High School JV and Middle School JV will play G/35;d5. Elementary School JV and Third Grade & Under will play G/30;d5. First Grade & Under will play G/25;d5. If any sections are merged, they will play at the slowest time control in force among the merged sections.

Notation will not be required at the Regionals.

Students with perfect scores in a JV section at a Regional will be permitted to play in the Championship section at the Finals on January 25.

The number of students who qualify for Finals will depend on the number of entrants. Here are some approximate numbers: High School JV, 48; Middle School JV, 56; Elementary School JV, 72; 3rd Grade & Under, 72; and First Grade & Under, 16.

Remember that students who qualify for the Finals are not automatically entered. Qualifiers will need to register for the Finals. You will be given instructions at the Regionals.
